Happy New Month Beautiful People.

It's February, the month of love and I'm hoping you experience it to the fullest this season and beyond.

Speaking of love, one of the ways we get to express and experience genuine love is through relationships. I have previously done a series on relationships where I talked about romantic relationships, family bond, friendship and workplace relationship.

You can take time to read up on them. In this post I'd like to emphasize on something that we rarely talk about.

Most times we focus on how important it is to have good friends and how friendships are the next best thing after sliced bread. It is uncommon to engage in conversations about being a good friend.

Well, that's the focus in this post. If you're wondering, how can I be a good friend?, then you definitely need to read this. In addition to that, if you want to know if you have been a good friend, read on.

Friendship is one of the best ways we go through life with ease. I believe that after family, friendship is the next best thing that can happen to a person.

Sometimes I wonder how people manage their life from day to day, week to week and year to year without a friend. By the way, do you think it's possible to do life without a friend? Let me know what you think in the comment section.

Here are a few qualities of a good friend:

1. Honesty:
First of all, a person must tell themselves the truth before they can even attempt to be honest with others. A good friend should always present the truth as politely and sincere as possible. If you don't want to be lied to then don't lie to your friend.

2. Attentive:
One of the qualities that we often take for granted is listening, this is actually a skill too. The world we live in is so noisy that everyone wants to be heard at all times. It takes a good friend to give you attention and a listening ear when you need it. Don't always be in a hurry to talk, most times, a million words can be said through non-verbal communication. You can only pick them if you are attentive.

3. Supportive:
This does not always have to be financial, it could be physical or even emotional. You just need to be sensitive enough to know what kind of support your friend requires at every given time. What is most important is that you are there for them when they need you.

4. Loyal:
Commitment is highly required when it comes to friendship, of course you have to be willing to give your time and make sacrifices to the relationship it as long as it matters to you. Stick with your friend through thick and thin not only when the going is good. Let them know that they can trust you and that you have their back come what may.

5. Find a connection:
Before you can genuinely say a person is your friend you must be sure that there are things you two have in common, how else can you relate with the person. This is the common ground that brings the connection required for the friendship. You can't be friends with someone who doesn't share similar goals, values, ideologies or perspective with you. I'm not sure it can work that way. Let me know if you disagree with me in the comment section.

6. Show and accept Love:
The truth is, life is always a lot easier when you have someone in your corner rooting for you. Be willing to show (unconditional) love to that person you call your friend. Also, you need to open up your heart to receive love too. There's no better feeling in the world than loving and being loved in return.

Don't hold back when it comes to friendship, be generous enough to give and be vulnerable enough to receive love. A hug, a smile, a pat on the shoulder, a wink, a call, a random message, a gift, a text, all of these go a long way in building a healthy relationship.

In conclusion, I must remind you that it is important to be intentional about any relationship you are getting involved in. Be sensitive enough to know if a relationship is worth it or not so you don't waste your effort watering a seed that shouldn't have been planted in the first place.

I hope these tips help you build healthy relationship. One thing I am sure of is that possessing these qualities would eventually make you a better person in the long run so they are good for your personal development. You can be sure that with these qualities, everyone would want to have a relationship with you too.

Do well to drop your thoughts in the comment section and don't hesitate to share this post to be a blessing to someone.
